8 November to 11 November - Mallacoota Kayaking and Walking Weekend

Base Camp

Walk Coordinators: Diane Moon, Eric Moon, Lyn Evans and Phil Kendall

Meet: TBA at TBA

Grade: Easy/Moderate

Description: Grade: Easy to moderate walks, easy 1/2 day paddles but wind dependent. Easy walk is around 10 km, moderate walk 2 km. Paddles around 8 km each.

We have 3 nights accommodation booked at Karbeethong Lodge and have planned both kayaking and walking activities for the weekend as well as the usual evening frivolities.

There will be three kayak trips, varying in duration from between 3 to 4 hours - depending on the weather. While it’s great to do the whole distance and share morning tea and lunch stops together, people can choose to turn around at any point to reduce the distance of

paddling. Kayaks are available for hire if you do not have one. If you are not planning to do all 3 kayak trips, there are many other things to do such as enjoying easy coastal and lake walking trails or you could bring or hire a bike and explore the many trails around

Mallacoota or go fishing, or just relax at one of the local cafes.

Apart from the kayaking we are planning a lovely loop walk of about 4 hours duration which is rated easy. On the way home we have planned to walk up Genoa peak. While this walk is only 2km return, the last 100m to the top is a fairly steep climb. Three steel ladders

take you to the summit where there are magnificent views of Mallacoota Inlet, the ocean and surrounding country.

Karbeethong Lodge accommodation has already been fully booked. We would still encourage you to join us but you would need to find alternative accommodation at one of the caravan parks or one of the many accommodation places in Mallacoota. If there are

cancellations we will inform you via the BVBW email.

5 August to 19 August - Outback

Base Camp

Walk Coordinator: Jeff Vaughan

Contact Jeff 04 2362 7012

Grade: See Description

Description: The Flinders Ranges cover almost 500kms north to South and up 150 kms wide so the the proposed trip will only give a taste of that semi arid rugged country. At this stage I would like to start in the South around the Mount Remarkable National Park and

work north through the towns of Quorn and the Dutchmans Stern park towards Hawker and the central Ranges including places such as Wilpena pound, Bunyeroo valley, Brachina gorge, the old mining town of Blinman, Parachilna and North towards Mt Chambers

gorge. A possibility if we have time is to extend to the Gammon ranges and Arkaroola Village. The area is famous geologically and includes places such as Ediacara Conservation park where the first multicelled life on earth was found and Brachina gorge has a geological

trail to follow.

Other activities include the Pitchie Ritchie historic railway, Aboriginal Cultural tours at Nepabunna and old mine tours at Blinman. the Heysen trail also runs through the ranges and extended walks could be taken by some.

So in summary at this stage I am proposing several camps at strategic points where we could undertake mostly day walks or even driving tours depending on interests.I have had talks with a friend who has done a lot of touring and walking in the Ranges and has

suggested staying at some private homesteads where tourist facilities are set up and are less crowded then some of the Parks.

I am open to sugestions and the trip plan is flexible, as issues such as rain could affect road and access particularly in the North. Later in the year we will have a meeting of those interested and nut out more details.

I picked up the Hema Flinders Ranges map from ARB in Bega and am using an old book "A camping tour of the Flinders Ranges" by Keith Franks (Rigby)
